Skilled Labor Research

Identifying the Greatest Manufacturing Industry Challenges

From 2015 to 2025, 2 million manufacturing jobs in the U.S. are expected to go unfilled because of the skills gap. Our grant-funding research identifies the greatest manufacturing industry challenges so we can find a solution.

How Our Research Solves the Challenges of the Manufacturing Industry

82% of executives feel the skills gap will hurt their ability to meet customer demand. The employment challenges of the manufacturing industry can be solved, but specific industry knowledge gaps must be identified first. That’s where our team at the College Alliance for Advanced Manufacturing (CAAM) helps. We continually research and measure the skills gap across Florida’s workers by consulting with businesses and working in the field to pinpoint specific issues.

From that data, we narrow down the skills that Florida manufacturing employees need most. Starting in 2015 and continuing for ten years, 3.5 million manufacturing jobs are expected to be needed in the U.S. We help companies ensure they can fill those openings with skilled employees. But we don’t do it alone. Click here to meet our valuable industry partners helping us solve this worker shortage.

How Do We Address These Manufacturing Industry Trends?

According to The Manufacturing Institute, 84% of executives feel U.S. manufacturing has a shortage of skilled employees.

To fill this need, we stay involved with a number of grants for manufacturing companies:

  • Train the manufactured construction workers of tomorrow: TRAMCON
  • Improve manufacturing welding and CNC skills: SEELC
  • Create a basic manufacturing curriculum: Banner Center Grant
  • Design 10 classes for critical manufacturing need: ETAM
  • Develop a blended online basic manufacturing training: TBL
  • Identify and measure industry needs. Support curriculum creation. Develop articulation agreements. Oversee curriculum quality. Encourage grant-funded training across the state: FL TRADE
  • Further the United States’ ability to create home-based, advanced manufacturing jobs: Insert your grant here!

"I am forever grateful to Polk State and the Florida Trade Grant!"
